Sanjoy's work in photography is as diverse as there are stars in the sky and grains of sand on the seashore. One of the most inspiring aspects of this photographer's work, is his ability to experiment with new ideas, while he implements his extensive body of knowledge into the images he produces.
Our staff was very inspired by the pleasing compositions and great use of color and lighting in many of Sanjoy's images. Not only does Sanjoy pursue new avenues in his image-making, but he succeeds in producing new image forms, which few photographers have ever thought were possible.
As a graduate of Parson's School of Design in New York City, Sanjoy's educational background lends itself very well to his style of photography. Parson's is very well known around the world as a school on the cutting edge of all art forms.
The staff at Profotos was very inspired by the magnificent work in Sanjoy's portfolio and we hope you will feel this sense of inspiration as well. Be sure to take your time perusing the inspiring images in Sanjoy's portfolio and take in all of the new aspects of image-making he is hard at work producing.,Sanjoy Chatterjee, accidental lensman, gave up the conventional logic of an MBA in the USA, to follow the Inner Eye.
A graduate from the Parsons School of Design, NYC, 1991, he majored in Photography and Graphics. The city of New York was a great learning school, as was working with Jamie Hankins, Tom Contrino as well as Jean Grossman.
His heart, however, lay in the visual disorder that is India. On a whim and a prayer, he returned to the city of his birth - Calcutta and took the road of a commercial photographer.
Over the next few years, apart from his advertising photography and assignments with Rohit Khosla, Khazana etc, he continued his interest in Nudes and Abstract. Exhibitions at Chitrakala Parishad - Bangalore, Lalit Kala Academy Biennial - New Delhi, Gallery Upstairs – Calcutta and Arts Inc - New Delhi followed.
A move to Delhi in 1994 widened the body of his work. Advertising campaigns for leading agencies in the country that take pride of the place include his work for Discovery Channel, Dettol, Levi's, Duracell, Bharat Petroleum, Centre Fresh, A.Sirkar Jewellers, Hyundai Santro, Carrier Aircon, Hudco, Nokia, Radisson Ffort Hotel, Ensemble, Tarun Tahiliani, Jattin Kochhar, Aki, Ogilvy & Mather, Hindustan Thompson, McCann-Erickson, Bates India, Enterprise Nexus, etc.
His photographs have won him an entry in the One Show, Neil French's Top 50 Campaigns (Twice), A&M Best Photography Award of the Year - 1999 (Gold and Silver), CAG, Abby, 3As of I. His works have also published in French Photo, Rohit Khosla's Vanguard, Femina, Namaskar, Society Fashion, Oomph, Yes etc.
An avid experimenter, Sanjoy occasionally takes time out from his commercial commitments to pursue a range of personal project: Movements (he calls it "daily life as it goes by"), Kumbh Mela, and of course, Calcutta.
This one-time rock drummer and itinerant traveler plans one day to walk the green paddy fields of Vietnam, chase a mirage with a caravanserai in the West Sahara, ask out a geisha to a nightclub in Tokyo and, if luck holds out, trek in outer space.
Life for him is raw stock. The universe, a series of transparencies.
Seeing, as they say, is believing.
