Patrick Ray Dunn is in the
business of producing surrealistic images on a very high level
of artistic expression, through the photographic medium. Patrick's
work in fine art and stock photography began in 1985, while he
explored day and night landscapes. Soon enough, Patrick's passion
for the medium led him to other avenues, including creative darkroom
manipulation.
While he was still a newcomer to photography, Patrick's surreal
images of landscapes and female nude silhouttes gained the attention
of one of photography's most influential masters - Howard Chapnick,
former President of Black Star. Howard's suggestions to Patrick
were instrumental in leading him into a commercial career in
photography, which would result in world-wide acclaim and recognition.
Patrick Ray Dunn has been published in nearly every country
around the world and his work is collected by numerous art collectors
and buyers every year. The images Patrick produces are truly
one-of-a-kind, as the amount of work he puts into each one is
evident even at first glance.
We are very excited and honored to exhibit the work of such
a prominent artist here on Profotos. The selection of work in
Patrick's Profotos Portfolio is among the best you will find
anywhere in the world. This is the work of a true master of the

I'm a graduate of the University of the Self-Taught with a major in Photography Trial & Error, and a minor in Luck -i.e., I am self-taught with an occasional mentor, and by reading every book on the subject. I started my photography "addiction" in 1985 shooting day and night landscapes throughout the western United States. I did not start out shooting with the intent of achieving commercial success: I simply enjoyed creating these images. With the risk of sounding pretentious; I created these images for my own artistic fulfillment. And shooting scenics did not completely satisfy my skewed artistic slant. So in the summer of 1988, I plunged into special effects photography by using a 35mm slide duplicator and in-camera double exposures. I eventually custom built a 4x5 slide duplicator with a unique pin registration system.
By 1989, I had a small body of work of surreal photo-art that I sent to Howard Chapnick, then President of Black Star. Howard Chapnick is considered the "Granddaddy of Photojournalism", and is highly regarded worldwide in the photography business. I was hoping to get a critique from this giant in the business. Instead, Howard surprised me with a proposal to write a picture story of my surreal photo-art titled "The Surrealistic Photographic Eye of PR Dunn".
This picture story was published in magazines worldwide. And
this was my start in commercial photography. Since then, my unusual
stock images have been published in virtually every country in
the world. In 1997, I bought a MAC computer, and switched to
digital photo-illustration--once again--with the help of a few
computer savvy mentors. My current photocompositions are a cross-pollination
of optical and digital F/X photography.
So please contact me if you have unusual stock image needs
that fit my forte. I shoot stock and assignment photography in
the studio and on location. But I must warn all potential art
buyers: I am not available fo work-for-hire, buyouts, or the
transfer of copyright of any of my images. Nor will I participate
in royalty-free stock images--this is simply not negotiable.
I'm a General Member of the American Society of Media Photograhers,
and also Editorial Photographers. I adhere to the suggested business
practices and ethics of these organizations.
